Fall Sports Review:
The fall season ended in November and Loretto teams
did very well in 2007 with all five teams advancing
to sections, three league championships, one section
title and an individual qualification to the State meet
in Cross Country.
Athletics is an integral
part of the educational process. Students are expected
to develop playing skills, respect for teammates and
opponents, respect for rules and officials, health
and physical fitness, and good sportsmanship.
To be an athlete means more than merely meeting members
of other teams in contests. The athlete learns to appreciate
all individuals for their particular talents. She learns
the meaning of teamwork and its importance in life
as well as in sports. She learns that training rules
are important and that to break them is to let herself
as well as the team down. She knows that whatever she
does either boosts or lowers team morale. It takes
more than physical ability to be a good athlete. A
good athlete must be willing to accept the basic philosophies
that are so important in becoming an admired athlete
and, even more important in becoming a respected person
with a high sense of moral integrity, a competitive
spirit, and the ability to be honest and forthright
in all endeavors.
Attitude is one of the principal requisites in becoming
a champion in any sport and, of course, attitude is
best defined to the athlete as how you act, how you
feel and how you think in showing your disposition.
The desire to excel, to win, "to pay the price," are
positive points or attributes of attitude. An athlete
displays proper attitude by acting like an athlete
and a lady, showing respect for others at all times,
always displaying good conduct, avoiding un-sportsmanlike
actions, cooperating at all times with officials, shaking
hands with opponents before and after the contest,
showing self-control at all times, accepting decisions
and abiding by them, accepting both victory and defeat
with pride and compassion, and never being boastful
or bitter.
Loretto wants always to be proud of our athletes for
the Christian women that they are, not for whether they
win or lose! [top]
Athletes must meet all League and C.I.F. requirements
before they participate in a given sport. Students must
also meet specific academic requirements of Loretto
to be eligible to participate in the athletic programs.
According to C.I.F. regulations, if an ineligible player
tries out, or practices, or plays, all Loretto High
School teams may be rendered ineligible for the entire
school year. A student may not try out for any sport,
nor attend any practices, nor play in any games until
she has been declared officially eligible and has medical
records on file. [top]
- Written parental authorization (annually);
- Physician's authorization (annually);
- Good academic standing.
No student on academic probation is eligible to participate
in Loretto athletic programs.
Athletes rendered ineligible by Term 1 grades may use
Term 2 midterm grades to determine eligibility to try
out for and participate in Term 3 sports. Athletes
rendered ineligible by Term 3 grades may use Term 1
midterm grades to determine eligibility to try out
for and participate in Term 2 sports. [top]
C.I.F. rules require that all students wishing to participate
in an organized sport must show evidence of having
a physical given by a licensed California physician.
The medical exams that incoming frosh must have before
admission to Loretto High School are good for participation
in sports for one year only. [top]
Students must also submit signed parent permission
forms before they will be allowed to participate in
any sport. This form is part of the Administrative
Forms packet. Students will not be issued a uniform
nor be allowed to practice until they have shown evidence
of a physical exam and adequate insurance coverage. [top]
