CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES

Clubs and Student Activities exist based purely on student interest. They provide students with another avenue for personal development and they enrich the rigorous academic program. The variety of clubs guarantees that each student will find something of interest. Students can apply to start a new club by obtaining an application from the Director of Student Activities.

Business & Investments Club is open to all students who are interested in exploring the world of business and finance.

Book Club membership consists of students and teachers who enjoy reading and discussing books in an informal atmosphere. Meetings are held monthly during lunch. Members select the books we read and have the opportunity to lead discussions. Students develop their independent thinking skills and leadership skills. We read a variety of literature from contemporary to classical.

Creative Writing is open to students of all class levels who love to write. Club members will get together monthly to share creative poems, stories, and essays for group critique. Knitted items will be offered to charitable organizations within the community.

Ecology Club encourages students to "think globally and act locally" in caring for our environment. Field trips, habitat restoration and conservation programs are examples of club activities in which we have engaged in past years.

French Club (Le Cercle Francais) is open to currently enrolled French students of Loretto. The club's purpose is to expand one's mind in French language and culture, to expose others to its beauty, to get involved in local French-oriented activities and to raise funds for a student trip to France .

Furry Friends desires to educate students on proper animal care, increase awareness of service opportunities available aiding animals and to promote the humane treatment of animals throughout the community. (NEW)

Med Club strives to educate students who are interested in medical careers. Guest speakers will be invited to discuss current issues and career opportunities. The club will also provide insight into ways of increasing chances of being accepted to a medical school. (NEW)

Multi-Cultural Club is a student led endeavor to foster cultural awareness and appreciation of diversity. Through the monthly sharing of ideas, music, art and food, students grow in friendship, knowledge, and a deeper under-standing of what it means to be a citizen of the planet.

Peace Club is open to students who are dedicated to creating a peaceful environment locally and globally.

Pink Ladies is open to all students who are devoted to promoting and living a healthy lifestyle.

Political Society allows students to investigate current local, state, national, and world issues from a balanced viewpoint. Students will select topics for research and discuss them in an open and non-critical forum. The goal is to present and discuss topics without bias so the club's future voters can make wise and rational electorate decisions. Guest speakers are scheduled to provide an outside orientation to key issues. Additionally, service opportunities are pursued, especially those that help students gain insight into issues from a participatory focus. Finally, students seek involvement in Loretto activities such as mock elections and student government.

Once each trimester/season, a sports kick-off is sponsored by Spirit and Sport, introducing the teams to the entire student body.

CLUBS CONNECTED TO STATE OR NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS

Acceptance into the California Scholarship Federation is by application only. At the end of each term students must submit a written application to the CSF moderator. TEAMS (Test of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) is a team competition in which Northern California high schools compete annually at Stanford University . Loretto fields two teams of eight students each who begin preparing for this contest in the fall under the guidance of local professional engineers and scientists. Parents who are scientists or engineers are asked to help coach this event. The competition consists of a battery of tests that students take as a team. All eight students work together to complete one test. The first test is a multiple-choice exam and the second is problem solving. Participation is open to frosh through seniors. If you like math and science and you think that solving puzzles and problems is fun, then this is the organization for you.
